The Writing & Communication Center is dedicated to working with writers both within Duke and the broader Durham community. Our goal is to help writers, not just pieces of writing, develop. In all of our work, we actively seek to support diverse, inclusive writing communities.
Our highly educated consultants help at any stage of a writing process – from brainstorming and researching to drafting, revising, and fine-tuning a final draft. We work with all texts including presentations and posters.
We are a space committed to equity and inclusion. Our consultants and staff draw from diverse backgrounds, bring a range of experiences and perspectives to our work, and engage in extensive, ongoing learning and reflection. We expect writers to join us in creating a safe environment for the expression of non-discriminatory perspectives while respecting our consultants’ knowledge and commitment.

The Writing & Communication Center Opens for Fall on August 24!
The WCC offers both in-person and synchronous online appointments; please schedule the appointment type that best meets your needs. We also take walk-ins!
In Fall, you will find us on West Campus in Perkins 112 from 9 am-9 pm Monday through Thursday and 5-8 pm on Sundays. We also offer online appointments during the same hours. We also have hours on East Campus Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday evenings in Bivins 207.
Not sure how to find us on East? Head for the softball fields and Bivins is the last building before you reach the field. You'll find the WCC in the center section of the building, upstairs.
For online appointments, when it's time for your appointment, log into the scheduling software, click on your appointment slot, and click "start or join online consultation." You'll be able to share any writing you've done so far and video-chat with your consultant.
The Graduate Writing Lab reopens for fall Tuesday, September 1!
The Graduate Writing Lab, a partnership between the Writing & Communication Center and The Graduate School, is an in-person writing group that offers regular accountability and catered feedback for graduate-student writers.
In FalI 2026, the GWL will be meeting:
- On Tuesdays from 2 - 5 pm and Thursdays 10am-1pm in Murthy Digital Studio (Bostock 121) and on Zoom

Undergraduate Writing Accountability Group returns September 11!
Attention undergraduates! Working on an honors thesis or other writing project?
The Undergraduate Writing Accountability Group (UWAG), a weekly workshop offered by the Writing & Communication Center, will keep you motivated and get you to the finish line!
Join other students for a weekly check-in and Friday writing sessions from 2:00–5:00PM in Murthy Digital Studio (Bostock 121).

Want to Work as a Writing Consultant?
If you're an undergraduate, the first step is to enroll in Writing 255, a course that will introduce you to writing center theory and practice. You'll hone your writing process, develop a consulting philosophy, and get some practice before you start work the next semester.

Duke Community Use Policy
Our first priority at the Writing & Communication Center is to provide support to Duke undergraduate student writers and graduate student writers admitted through The Graduate School. We ask that graduate students limit themselves to scheduling one appointment per week and come for any additional appointments on a walk-in basis.
While we are happy to meet with professional students and Duke faculty and staff on a space-available basis, to ensure that undergraduate and Graduate School students have first access to appointments, we must ask that all other users of the Writing & Communication Center come for walk-in, same-day consultations only.
